ROSSLAND MOUNTAIN FILM FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY THE MEMBERS OF THE
NELSON AND DISTRICT CREDIT UNION

Thanks to the local community - they, more than ever, made the event a success this year.  They made it happen!
Local businesses should be proud of the themselves that they supported a non-profit group (RMFFS) as well as other community groups we partnered with: Rossland Skatepark Society, Rossland Historical Museum, Kootenay Columbia Trails Society, and the Red Mountain Racers.
A special recognition to the Board of Directors is required for their continued efforts in putting on this event.  The RMFF Society is always seeking new board members and next year will be no exception.  Please contact us if you are interested in participating more in this event.

A little bit about the company...

"At Frozen Laundry, they design technical bike and board adventure wear for folks who live to ride.
They are committed to intelligent, minimalist design and obsessively fine-tuning functional cuts.
Their apparel is entirely designed, manufactured and tested in British Columbia. Yes, seriously.
They are mindful of environmental impacts and carefully select textiles; choosing recycled,
organic and natural fibres whenever they can.
Then they skip the store, hit the road and sell directly to you.
Keeping it simple saves you money.
Their garments are meticulously sewn, relentlessly tested and backed by one bad ass guarantee.

They worry about the details, you just get out and enjoy the ride." http://frozenlaundry.ca/pages/about-us

Rossland Mountain Film Festival

presented by the members of the Nelson & District Credit Union

 November 22-27

Tickets are now on sale!  Tickets can be ordered online (www.rosslandfilmfest.com) or at RossVegas (not all tickets available online – see below for details).

Artists -  we are still accepting donated pieces for our Art Auction.  Please email us at rosslandfilmfest@gmail.com.

Kicking off the week on Tuesday, November 22nd will be the Rossland Museum who is hosting Guest Speaker Ron Shearer at the Rouge Gallery (tickets $10).  Ron grew up in Rossland and graduated from Ohio State with a Ph.D in Economics.  His talk will be on Rossland’s skiing history – particularly before the lifts within the 1930s and 1940s.  With many photos and museum archives, his talk will bring to life the rich history of this area.

On Thursday, November 24th, our Bar Sponsor (the Flying Steamshovel) will be premiering the Art of Flight.  The Art of Flight follows Travis Rice, John Jackson, Mark Landvik, Scotty Lago, Jake Blauvelt, Nicolas Muller, Gigi Ruf, DCP and Pat Moore as they dream up new global adventures and progress the sport of snowboarding to unimaginable levels. From the producers of That's It, That's All, The Art of Flight brings in a new breed of snowboarding entertainment. Equal parts action and adventure mix with the inevitable drama encountered along the way. For the first time, viewers are immersed in the sometimes successful, often trying, quest to open up new, unexplored mountains in remote corners of the world.  Entry by donation.

Friday, November 25th is the evening to grab your fancy dress and tie:  The annual Gala, supported by Teck Trail Operations, will be featuring music by Dominque Frassard and held at the Prestige.  Tickets are $35 and don’t forget the art auction!

Saturday, November 26th is the big day – make sure you get your tickets for all the events early!  Starting at 10am, the Kootenay Association of Science & Technology (www.kast.com), has partnered up with the RMFF to bring you a workshop with Christian Begin “Journey of an adventure film maker” at the Rock Cut Pub (tickets $20) along with the REEL Youth Film Festival (in conjunction with the Rossland Council of Arts and Culture).  Films start at noon at the Miner’s Hall and entry is $3 at the door.

Starting at 2:30 will be the All Ages Show at the RSS Auditorium.  This event is open to the community and suitable for the family.  Entry is $5 at the door – kids under 5 are free!

At 6:30 the doors will open for our main event, sponsored by Kootenay Mountain Culture Magazine, which is featuring co-headliners Five Alarm Funk and Shout Out Out Out Out.  Films will be starting at 7:00pm and tickets are required in advance ($35).

Sunday, November 27 will be Guest Speakers Baiba and Pat Morrow doing “Mountains, the Sacred and the Profane”.   When born and raised Kootenay boy Pat Morrow, along with his wife Baiba, summitted Carstnsz Pyramind, the loftiest peak on the Australasian continent, Pat became the first person in the world to climb the highest mountains on each of the seven continents. His book Beyond Everest: Quest for the Seven Summits, documents that hallmark adventure. In recognition of these achievements, he received the Order of Canada in 1988 and the Summit of Excellence award in 1990.

In their audiovisual presentation, award winning photojournalists Pat and Baiba Morrow will reflect on three decades of high adventure -- from searching for sacred hidden valleys in the Himalaya to local community efforts to keep the mountains wild and free.

The contemplation of sacred places, whether Mt Kailas in Tibet or Qat’muk in the Jumbo Valley, can help us appreciate the value of wilderness, treat the environment with care and respect, and instill pride and a sense of place.

Start time is 2pm at the Prestige.  Tickets available at the door for $10.

PRESS RELEASE - October 31, 2011

 Rossland Mountain Film Festival

presented by the members of the Nelson & District Credit Union

November 24-27

With a slight change in the U-19 format this year, the Rossland Council for Arts in Culture has partnered up with the Kootenay Association for Science and Technology to bring you the REEL Youth Film Festival.

Screenings will begin at noon on Nov 26th at the Miners Hall with a $3 admission charge. The REEL Youth Film Festival features some of the best in international youth film-making, along with submissions from the talented youth of the West and Central Kootenays (youth under 19 must submit films by November 4, 2011 – visit www.rosslandcac.com for submission guidelines and prize information).

The 2011 Reel Youth Film Festival is a collection of compelling and entertaining short youth films: animations, dramas, documentaries, comedies and a musical. Whether facing down riot police in Copenhagen, vying for love in Philadelphia, or searching Vancouver’s downtown east side for a missing aunt, these are the unflinching stories of today's youth.

Local sponsors of the Reel Youth Film Festival include the Columbia Basin Trust, Kootenay Association for Science and Technology, BC Arts Council, Columbia Power Corporation, Nelson and District Credit Union and of course the Rossland Council for Arts and Culture.

The highly anticipated Gala Event, sponsored by Teck, is once again taking place in the Ross Thompson Room at the Prestige. Ticket prices are $35. Doors open at 6pm with films starting at 7pm. As usual, you can expect a lovely evening of live performance, great food (by Gabriella’s), choice of wine, and, returning this year, the Silent Art Auction which will feature local artists.

The performer this year will be Dominique Fraissard: hailing originally from Australia, he now calls Canada’s west his home. He has opened for Jack Johnson, John Butler Trio, the Waifs, Bill Bourne; amongst others and has been a BCIMA 2011 Top 3 Finalist for: People’s Choice, Best Folk/Traditional Recording, Best Roots/World Recording, and Best Producer. Certain to be a hit in Rossland, BC Musician Magazine sums him up by saying “…we are sure to be hearing more of this warm, comforting voice in the cool, dark festival night”. Listen to his music at: http://www.myspace.com/dominiquefraissard

As done last year, the Silent Art Auction will be donating ALL FUNDS raised. This year’s organization will be the Kootenay Columbia Trails Society (KCTS – www.kcts.ca): the group that creates and maintains the trails within the area. Last year, the auction’s highest item went to artist Julie MacDermott (www.juliemacdermott.com) who has agreed to come back this year with two pieces – her energetic, action paintings of the Rossland lifestyle will be sure to grab your attention..
